Lord Voldemort led a "Dark Arts" campaign in
which he was personally responsible for the murder of hundreds of muggles
and wizards. His killing assistants were called "Death Eaters" and
his official symbol is the "Death Mark". Lord Voldemort killed
Harry's parents when he was
about 1 year old and attempted to kill
Harry. But mysteriously his attack on Harry was repelled, leaving Harry with a lightning-bolt scar on
his forehead, and Voldemort lost nearly all of his power. He has
been hiding the rest of Harry's
life, slowly rebuilding his powers to someday return and finally destroy
Harry. Nearly
everyone in the wizarding world is extremely afraid of Lord Voldemort, and
will not even utter his name for fear that that may give him strength to
return.
